Standards Aligned System (SAS), as described in their website, is "designed to link Pennsylvania’s Academic Standards, anchors, eligible content, big ideas, essential questions, instruction, interventions, instructional materials, assessment, and professional development together into a logical and aesthetically coherent curriculum framework." It is based on research that specifies what makes a great school. The Pennsylvania Department of Education believes that great schools share the following ideas:
Clear Standards
Fair Assessment
Curriculum Frameworks
Instructions
Materials and Resources
Interventions
SAS is designed with those six ideas in mind.
- Below is a link to a lesson plan created by Amanda Benz, Stephanie Parisi and Meghan Lynch using the Standards Aligned System lesson plan template. It is designed for a 1st grade writing assignment and explores the usage of adjectives, known as "describing words" in the students daily writing using a friendly comparison to a Showing Hand, which ultimately is a finger that uses each of our five senses to describe an object.
- Below is an example of an empty hand that one may use as the template for "The Showing Hand" which would serve as the graphic organizer for the lesson plan:
- Below is a link to an evaluated lesson plan using the Standards Aligned System criteria. The original lesson plan, Learning Fractions with M&M's was found online. It is a 2nd grade math lesson that focuses on how to understand fractions by using M&M's. The breakdown of the evaluation of the lesson plan is shown in the document below, however it did not score very strongly.
